Holiday Lights Maola Milk Merry Mile 2018

Holiday Lights Maola Milk Merry Mile
November 22, 2018 to December 30, 2018

Location:
2nd Street & the Boardwalk

Holiday Lights at the Beach is a holiday tradition that brings joy and wonder to Hampton Roads every holiday season! Join us this year from Thanksgiving Day through December 30.

2017 brought a new experience to the boardwalk at Holiday Lights Maola Milk Merry Mile…a nautical and holiday fantasy of lights spread over a dozen blocks – from 8th Street to 22nd Street. The light show featured over 50 of our most popular, hand-picked displays along the boardwalk and beach. The entrance wase at 2nd Street.

This shorter, more intimate light show features a shiny journey into nautical, holiday, and adventure lands – all along the beautiful Virginia Beach boardwalk. Festive fish, jumping dolphins, frolicking porpoises – all in bright, colored lights against the clear night-time sky, are the stars of Holiday Lights Merry Mile. They are joined by Santa and his elves.

Drivers will be able to tune their car radio to a frequency to hear holiday music along the Holiday Lights at the Beach display, making it easy to see AND hear why this event has been named one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s “Top 20 November Events” and the American Bus Association’s “Top 100 Events in North America for 2011!”

Holiday Lights Maola Milk Merry Mile…open nightly at 5:30. Hours of operation are 5:30pm-10:00pm Sunday through Thursday and 5:30pm-11:00pm Friday-Saturday.

This is a ticketed event. All vehicles enter through the main entrance at 2nd Street. Show starts at 8th street. Cash only is accepted at the gate.

Sunday, May 6 – 11:00am-4:00pm

Everyone is invited to take part in the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival’s “Best Kite Contest.”  To enter this contest, participants bring a kite that they have made or purchased and fly it at the festival.  The contest consists of two parts: the actual kite itself (how it looks and how well it is made), and the participant’s ability to fly the kite.  Participants must be able to fly their kites consecutively in the air for 5 minutes at a height of 100 feet.  Kites will be judged on Flight (ability to fly for 5 minutes), Structural Design, Craftsmanship, and Visual Appeal.  There will be three competitive divisions: Master, Novice, and Youth (ages 7-14).  Trophies will be awarded for all divisions.

The Best Kite Contest is free to enter, and takes place from 1:30-3:00pm each day.

“Flight Training” – Experienced kite enthusiasts will assist novice flyers.  Topics include equipment selection, laying out of lines, setting up the field, launching the kite, flying and landing a kite, and safety.

“Flight Training” will take place each day.

Families are invited to participate in kite building workshops led by Archie Stewart of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.  Archie is a member of the American Kitefliers Association (AKA), and is a past Board Member and Chairman of Festivals and Competitions for Kites Over New England (KONE).  He is also a member of ConnectiKiters kite club, headquartered in Norwalk, CT and a member and competitor of the Eastern League Flyers Association. These workshops are free and include kite materials and instructions on how to build a kite, as well as the aerodynamics of kite flying and kite safety.

American Kite Association members from throughout the East Coast will present kite demonstrations, perform kite routines to music, and fly giant kites (up to 80 feet long) that include an octopus kite!  Kite vendors will be on site to sell various kinds of kites.

Awards will also be given each day for oldest and youngest kitefliers, funniest kite, most unusual kite, and biggest kite.

Admission to the kite festival is free.

Boardwalk hotel

virginia beach boardwalk hotelThere is no substitute sometimes for being right on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Mention the Va Oceanfront or Virginia Beach Oceanfront hotel and two things people picture are the sand and the Virginia bch boardwalk. For many the Boardwalk is part of the experience so being right on the boardwalk near the beach is the biggest criteria for hotel or motel selection.

Finding the Best Boardwalk Hotel on the Oceanfront According To Google

I cannot list every hotel here that you might frequent in your quest to be only footsteps from the pavement of the Virginia Boardwalk. There are too many hotels. There are too many ratings. And there too many opinions. So I will pull a few hotels and pick ones with good or great ratings

I am picking a hotel from what people consider to be the main area of the Oceanfront, the area from in the 20s block. Virginia Beach has incredible hotels for miles more as you head North but this is a heavily trafficked section, and our focus here

One Of Many Top Rated Beachfront Hotels: Virginia Beach Comfort Inn Suites

Virginia Beach Comfort Inn Suites

Rated over 4 stars at the time this was written the Comfort Inn is a Boardwalk Oceanfront hotel with a lot to offer at a good price point. In addition to the consistency of a being a national chain I saw some unique things which stood out.

They are:

  • Breakfast with a view
Hot buffet Breakfast with a view of the Oceanfront (great view= always a plus)
    Boardwalk Overlook
  • There is a hot tub indoors that overlooks the Boardwalk

Another Nearby Boardwalk Accommodation: Marriott Courtyard

A few blocks down is another highly rated chain hotel. The Marriot Courtyard is sort of a guaranteed excellence type hotel where you know certain elements will be there giving you piece of mind when you check in. The most obvious is the big lounging area. The other is the large breakfast in the morning. Coupled with clean rooms this is always a good choice and consistently ranks 4 out of 5 on Google

virginia beach boardwalk hotel amenitiesInstant Attractions Very Close To Boardwalk Located Hotel

Both hotels sit near the Naval Aviation Monument Park as well as 24th street park on the Boardwalk which has some fantastic entertainment annually including:

  • She Crab Soup Festival
  • Pan Festival
  • Salute to summer music bash
  • And lots more
  • And this is in addition to the things you can do at the beach, Boardwalk and around town

Commonwealth Brewery in Virginia Beach: Craft Beer in Chick’s Beach

craft beer chicks beachChicks Beach: Virginia Beach Locals Love Commonwealth Brewing Company

In the laid-back community of Chic’s Beach where there is sand dusted on the streets, small cottages filled with locals and delicious seafood restaurant’s on every corner, sits a fun and tasteful brewery, on the aptly named Pleasure House Road, called Commonwealth Brewing Company. The brewery is housed in a fully renovated former fire and rescue station, welcoming Beach locals and tourists alike. Their blue brick exterior, large logo and fun dripping lights attract anyone from the street who is passing by. Along with their custom cornhole boards, food trucks circling in and out and their picnic tables filled guests socializing and sipping flights of craft beer, this truly is a local gem. If you love craft beer, like my husband and I do, this place truly will wow your palate.

An Activity For Virginia Beach Couples

As a newcomer to the craft brew scene, I am open to trying new things whether it is a new dish, a bottle of wine or a craft brew—you name it I am game. So when my husband who, by thetim thumb way, loves any and all craft beer, asked me if we could go to this new local brewery, I jumped at the opportunity. As a new parent we are always looking for things we can do as a couple in the Virginia Beach Resort area. We found a sitter for our daughter (grandparents are truly the best) and took a much-needed parents day out. On a warm sunny day, we headed to Commonwealth Brewery.

His palate is a bit broader than mine, so when we came up to the long, wooden, funky bar he was eager to try all of them. I, on the other hand, didn’t know where to start. I said, “I will follow your lead.” So we ordered two flights, “containing a huge assortment of beer, especially when you are a new mama…”who has not drunk any booze in awhile. We found a spot outside and looked down at our list of beers, slightly wet from the condensation on our flight glasses. As we tried to guess which beer was which, we sipped on ale’s, different Saison’s, and many others.

Commonweath Brewery Favorite Beer: The Wealth

My favorite was The Wealth a crisp light Saison. Commonwealth brewery describes it as a multi-layered Belgian Saison filled with notes of fruit, spices and bread mingle and its carefully cultivated yeast strain’s help to achieve this dry, Belgian-style ale. Its alcohol per volume is about 5%, which is nice as it’s not too heavy, especially for a mama who is watching her alcohol intake due to breastfeeding. A nice warm up back into the adult beverage seat.

Commonwealth’s Owners Are Virginia Beach Natives Too

Commonwealth Brewing Company is the brainchild of owners Jeramy and Natalie, a husband and wife craft brewing duo whose love for creating unique craft beers has been a passion of theirs for years. Their passion brewed up in 2001 when Jeramy was visiting Natalie while she was studying abroad. They visited a German and Austrian brewery and beer hall and fell in love with all things beer. It wasn’t until 2012 after starting a family, and after many stove top experimentation, that they began seriously pursuing the idea of starting a brewery. Once the idea was set in stone, Jeramy began creating lots of test batches, and then their business plan soon followed. Finding a building that suited the characteristics, space, and fun location that they envisioned was not an easy feat at first.
