Community Involvement

Festival-goers are invited to attend the Old Beach Markets. The Old Beach Art & Eco Market and weekly Old Beach Farmers Market will be situated in three locations on Friday, April 27. These markets will feature locally made art, food and more in the ViBe Creative District.

Local restaurants and businesses, including Croc’s 19th Bistro, the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Zeiders American Dream Theater and more will have special events during the festival.

Art Events and Activities

Extending beyond a musical medium, Something in the Water will have events and activities centered around art. An Art Walk, backed by American Express, will have installations around Virginia Beach. Both local and national artists have created wall-sized murals and pop-up wall structures. Festival-goers can also receive free admission to the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art with their wrist band.

The festival will also be the stage Virginia’s first premier sneaker culture exhibition. On Sunday, April 28, festival-goers can view interactive exhibits showcasing sneaker culture.

Social Awareness Events

Trap the Vote is an organization dedicated to making young adults more politically aware. Attendees will be able to “engage, consume, interact and create around social change, culture and information.”

In conjunction with Cox Communication, Something in the Water will also feature More than Music. This lecture series will feature topics, including technology, education, women’s issues, inclusion and more. Speakers Deepak Chopra, Geoffrey Canada, Mimi Valdés, Sylvia Rhone and Jon Platt are slated to appear.

Pop-Up Church Service

The Something in the Water festival concludes on Sunday, April 28 with a pop-up church service. Another jam-packed lineup, the pop-up church service is set to feature nationally recognized gospel performers, including Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary and more.

Both local and national worship leaders will share the time, uplifting and uniting those who attend. Unlike the rest of the festival, the Sunday church service is free and open to the public. Something in the Water’s pop-up church service will be located on the beach at 20th Street.

In addition to pop-up church service, the God Talk panel will discuss “how millennials interact with religion.” This conversation is in partnership with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. This is scheduled to take place at the Virginia Beach Convention Center on Saturday, April 27.

Trap Karaoke

Pop-up church service isn’t the only innovative event set to take place at the Something in the Water festival. Festival-goers can take part in Trap Karaoke. Trap Karaoke is a “user-generated concert experience.” Imagine traditional karaoke but all performances are popular hip-hop hits. Trap Karaoke will take place at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
