The Origins of the Tattoo
The term “tattoo” has its roots in a 17th-century military tradition. In the Dutch Low Countries, innkeepers would call out “Doe den tap toe!” (meaning “Turn off the taps!”) to signal the end of the day and the return of soldiers to their barracks. This call was accompanied by the distinctive sounds of fifes and drums.
Over time, the phrase “tap toe” evolved into “tattoo,” and the practice of ending the day with a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands became synonymous with the term.

Education and Community Outreach
The Virginia International Tattoo is committed to providing educational opportunities for local youth. Each year, approximately 12,000 area students have the privilege of experiencing the Tattoo through in-school performances and special student matinees.
Furthermore, the Tattoo demonstrates its dedication to inclusivity by opening the final dress rehearsal to families of special needs patrons. This initiative ensures that everyone has the chance to enjoy this extraordinary event, regardless of their circumstances.
