As the winter chill settles over Coastal Virginia, the local music scene is just starting to heat up. The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts has officially kicked off its highly anticipated 2026 “Out of the Box” Series, a signature winter tradition that transforms the Miller Studio Theatre into the region’s most vibrant, intimate concert hall.
Running every Thursday from January 8 – March 5 (no show on February 12), this series offers a rare gift to the community: high-energy, professional concerts featuring the best local talent—all for free.
A Curated Musical Journey
What sets “Out of the Box” apart is its pedigree. The series is curated by WHRO’s Paul Shugrue, a name synonymous with musical discovery in Virginia. Shugrue’s expert ear ensures a diverse lineup that spans genres, from soulful blues to indie folk.
Every Out of the Box concert starts at 7pm with doors opening at 6pm.

The Miller Studio Experience
Unlike the grand, seated performances in the main hall, “Out of the Box” takes place in the Miller Studio Theatre. This setting offers a “club” atmosphere that brings the audience face-to-face with the performers. All concerts are standing room only, encouraging a lively, social environment where the community can dance and mingle.
Doors open at 6:00 PM, allowing guests to grab a spot and a drink before the music starts promptly at 7:00 PM. For those looking to elevate their evening, VIP tables and sponsorship opportunities are available, providing a home base amidst the standing-room energy.
