Doc Taylors: Where to Start Your Day Off Right

Virginia Beach’s Hidden Gem Breakfast Spot

One of the best parts of vacationing to a city or town is the fact that you don’t know anyone and have to use a GPS just to get to your next destination a few minutes down the road.

The thrill of turning the corner and seeing a street full of never-before-seen buildings and shops always brings a smile to a traveler’s face. But when it comes to eating, it’s better to know the hidden gems in the area rather than settling for the same chain restaurant you eat at every week at home.

While vacationing at the beach, chances are you have a full day’s itinerary ahead of you, which is why it is important to fuel up early to last until later in the afternoon. Well, in order to do so, we are going to reveal one of the most treasured breakfast joints in the Virginia Beach area that the locals take pride in every day of the year. We refer to this place as none other than, Doc Taylors. Doc Taylors was once a doctor’s office (hence the name), but eventually turned into the number one breakfast destination in Virginia Beach. During the summer time, expect a wait of, sometimes an hour to an hour and a half, but don’t worry. There is an entire building attached directly to the left of Docs, known as The Seaside Market Lounge.

The Seaside Market Lounge – Entertainment, Cocktails & More…

Open to those willing to patiently wait and sip on $2 Mimosas, Bloody Marys and other specialty drinks. The smell of bacon cooking in the oven behind the bar will keep your mouth watering and the music and Foosball table will keep you occupied until your pager finally buzzes. However, Seaside offers its own entertainments.

The lounge is open to the public during the day on Saturday and Sunday and offers:

  • Cocktails (of course!)
  • Large T.V. broadcasting sports games
  • Foosball
  • Corn hole
  • Music

You can also book the room for private parties, wedding rehearsals, special gatherings and business meetings.

But that’s not all Seaside is known for. Every Thursday from January to November, Seaside offers LIVE music, great food and yummy beverages. The doors open at 8 p.m. and music starts at 9 p.m. Local, regional and nationally known artists come to Seaside for a night of dancing and grooving. Past performances include:

  • The Funk Ark
  • Papadosio
  • Big Organ Trio
  • Jamie McLean Band
  • Dangermuffin
  • Bobby Lee Rodgers

The best part about Thursday nights is there is never a cover charge! See here for who is playing while you’re in town!

Personality Spills Over Onto the Menu

Once seated either inside the white, wooden interior dining room or on the outdoor screen porch, the real fun and adventure begins. You will be handed a two-sided laminated menu packed full with delicious, fresh and unique breakfast (and lunch) options. You can pick up on the personality of a restaurant by the name of their dishes. And Doc Taylors is famous for its catchy, humorous dish names that fit perfectly with the taste. They are unique, delicious and reflect a playful demeanor while offering sumptuous comfort foods.

So, what are these dishes we speak of? Well, there are plenty to choose from, but the more you visit Doc Taylor’s, the more you will notice which dishes are the most popular—not just for the name, but for the taste, too!

Some of these breakfast dishes are:

  • “The Ray Ray”
  • “The Flatliner”
  • The Beach Bum A.K.A. The Riley Gomez
  • The Pungo

Lunch dishes include:

  • 36th Street Club
  • “Rudee Inlet”
  • Dr. Todd’s “Killen Ya” Crab Cake
  • Catfish Po-Boy (The Rony-Rony)

As you can see, the names of the dishes themselves make the “orderee” curious as to what they look and taste like, therefore, give a random choice a whirl when it’s your turn to tell the waiter/waitress what you want.

A majority of the dishes at Doc Taylor’s are named after individual people who either made a positive impact on the restaurant or just ordered the item so much, Doc Taylor’s just had to rename the dish after the dedicated customer.

The great thing about all of the dishes at Doc Taylor’s is the prices. You see that dish up there, The Beach Bum A.K.A. The Riley Gomez? Well, it comes with two eggs any style, toast and bacon—all for just $3.50! And the Flatliner—two eggs scrambled together with sausage, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, hash browns and hot sauce with toast—yeah, that’s only $6.95.

The lunch dishes are at a great price too! Dr. Todd’s “Killen Ya” Crab Cake, a fresh lump Crab Cake with lettuce, tomato and granny smith apple tartar sauce is just $8.95.

Wash it all down with The Doctor’s World Famous Bloody Mary, Mimosa, Screwdriver or Greyhound for just $2.50 and you will officially fall in love with the place.

As you take the last bite off your plate, leaving only a white surface, your stomach will not only be satisfied, but your wallet will be too! Located on 23rd Street and Pacific Avenue, Doc Taylors truly is one-of-a-kind and is the perfect place to start the day full of great laughs, memories and, of course, food.
