Backbay National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1938, Backbay National Wildlife Refuge serves as a refuge and habitat for migratory birds. With over eight miles of scenic trails, visitors can enjoy the untouched beauty of Virginia Beach, including beaches, dunes, woodlands, agricultural fields and freshwater marshes. Thousands of swans, geese and other waterfowl flock to this beautiful habitat during the fall/winter migration, which peaks December–January.
